History of Innovation

Steffes Cabinet Shop
1947
Steffes Cabinet Shop

Born and raised in North Dakota, Steffes founder George Steffes moved to Portland to make Liberty ships during World War II. Upon his return in 1947, he decided to start a business making cabinets. Unable to construct a shop due to the shortage of materials, he found an old dance hall in Sentinel Butte, took it apart board by board, and reconstructed a building. The Steffes Cabinet Shop also served as the family's home for many years, as they literally raised their children in a manufacturing setting.

Not long after, George brought additional capabilities to his shop as he ventured into small metal fabrication, making the machinery to build church pews. This move opened the door for future opportunities for the business to continue growing and evolving: a philosophy of reinvention still valued today.

Snowmobile Skis
1967
Snowmobile Skis

In 1967, Steffes’ first snowmobile skis were produced. That same year, George retired and enjoyed working on personal projects with the lathe and welder in his little hobby shop. Shortly thereafter, George’s son, Paul, received his engineering degree from North Dakota State University and returned home.

Steffes & Son Mfg.
1973
Steffes & Son Manufacturing

Steffes & Son Manufacturing was established in 1973, and the business expanded into other small metal fabrication. Together, George and Paul had a love for creativity and invention, and they enjoyed working on anything and everything that came through the door.

Round Bale Feeders
1975
Round Bale Feeders

A good amount of work being completed at that time was related, in one way or another, to the agricultural industry. These connections brought along additional opportunities to meet the needs of the region, and in 1975 Steffes & Son Manufacturing produced their first Round Bale Feeder.

Grain & Storage Bins
1983

Shortly thereafter, Steffes & Son expanded the agricultural product line and introduced their first Hopper Bottom Grain & Storage Bins.

Electric Thermal Storage
1987
Electric Thermal Storage

After George’s passing in 1986, Paul focused on continuing to innovate and expand the business and formed Steffes’s Electric Thermal Storage (ETS) division. At that time, ETS heaters were being imported from Europe, and Paul quickly realized the opportunity they had to establish themselves as a manufacturing company. From there, the first Steffes Room Unit was produced.

ETS Expansion
1991
ETS Expansion

In need of a larger facility to manufacture Electric Thermal Storage products, Steffes expanded its footprint in Dickinson and added a facility North of town.

Dickinson North Addition
1996
Dickinson North Addition

As ETS business picked up, Steffes soon needed to increase its manufacturing space. Four years after acquiring their second building, an addition was constructed to make room for additional metal fabrication at the Dickinson North facility.

Steffes Corporation
1998
Steffes Corporation

Though they were operating in unison, the fabrication and ETS businesses were still separated by name. In 1998, Steffes & Son Manufacturing and Steffes ETS were merged to form Steffes Corporation.

Contract Manufacturing
1998
Contract Manufacturing

In 1998, Steffes Corporation signed its first major contract manufacturing agreement with a leading construction equipment company, a relationship that continues to evolve and strengthen today.

Oil & Gas Tanks
2007
Oil & Gas Tanks

The storage bins we produced in the early 1980s paved the way for our entry into the Oil & Gas industry. We began manufacturing tanks in 2007, and our first 400 BBL Oil Tanks were produced and sold from the Steffes South Plant. A few short years later, we were well known for our premium tanks in the Bakken.

Dickinson East Construction
2011
Dickinson East Construction

Our reputation in the Oil & Gas industry, coupled with the boom in the Bakken, required us to expand our Dickinson location yet again. In 2011, the Dickinson East facility was constructed to accommodate the manufacturing needs of our Oil & Gas division.

Oil & Gas Flares
2011
Oil & Gas Flares

Additional manufacturing space and an increase in equipment requests from producers led us to expand our Oil & Gas product line to include flares. The first Variable Orifice Flare was manufactured and installed in 2011.

Grand Forks West
2012
Grand Forks West Acquisition

To keep up with the demand for our manufacturing capabilities and OEM products, Steffes Corporation expanded into the sister city of Grand Forks and purchased a turnkey manufacturing facility, now referred to as Grand Forks West.

Grand Forks East
2014
Grand Forks East Purchase

In 2014, Steffes Corporation seized an opportunity to sell the South Plant in Dickinson and, with it, the manufacturing of large tanks. This transaction allowed them to continue to expand in western North Dakota and purchase a sister facility known as Grand Forks East.

Steffes, LLC
2015
Steffes, LLC

As the company continued to grow, Steffes Corporation became Steffes, LLC, and it remains a reputable, family-owned business today.

Steffes in Shelby
2021
Steffes in Shelby

To support our growing efforts to provide comprehensive metal fabrication to customers in the region, Steffes purchased its newest manufacturing facility in Shelby, North Carolina. Headquartered in Dickinson, Steffes has manufacturing, sales, and service facilities in five states, including North Dakota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wyoming.
